Former University of Florida quarterback, Danny Wuerffel, made a huge impact on the football program as a UF Gator, leading the team to their first national championship and winning the Heisman trophy in 1996his senior year. In addition to his incredible performances on the field, Wuerffel was also a first-team Academic All-American in 1995 and 1996. He was drafted into the NFL in 1997 and spent six years playing professional football. In 2013, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Upon his retirement from professional football, Wuerffel continued making an impact when he joined Desire Street Ministries, a nonprofit organization that works with poverty-stricken neighborhoods to develop the community as well as addressing their spiritual needs. He had become involved with the organization in the late 1990s, becoming its executive director during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Under Wuerffel, Desire Street Ministries moved its headquarters to Atlanta and expanded its programs to other inner cities.
