Meets in the Sanctuary
Join us every third Tuesday for a service of Prayer and Healing as we come together to encounter a God who heals us physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Either Pastor Rick Bonfim or Pastor John Freeland will be leading us in this service.
The Theology Behind Healing Prayer in Our Church
1. Scripture strongly affirms ministries of spiritual healing.
This is one of the responsibilities of the people of God that has been overlooked and underused in the last several years. We have forgotten that we, the Church, are in the ministry of healing. The root of the word healing in New Testament Greek, sozo, is the same as that of salvation and wholeness. Spiritual healing is God’s work of offering wholeness to body, mind, spirit, and relationships through confession, forgiveness, and reconciliation. Our healing God works, through His Holy Spirit, to bridge the gap in relationships between God and humanity.
The New Testament records that Jesus himself healed the estranged and the sick and then sent out His disciples on ministries of healing. James 5:14-16 records his call for disciples to pray for and anoint the sick, that they may be healed. “Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.”
2. All healing is of God.
The Church’s healing ministry in no way detracts from the gifts God gives through medicine and psychotherapy. It is no substitute for either medicine or the proper care of one’s health. It adds to our total resources for wholeness. Healing is not magic. It is the power of God at work in the lives of persons seeking His healing power in their lives. Those who minister healing in the name of Jesus are channels of God’s love and power. Although no one can predict what will happen in a given instance, many marvelous healings have taken place in our services. God does not promise that we shall be spared suffering but does promise to be with us in our suffering. Trusting that promise, we are enabled to recognize God’s sustaining presence in pain, sickness, injury, and estrangement.
3. Patterns of healing services grow out of both church traditions and the needs of the moment.
Laying on of hands, anointing with oil, and Holy Communion will be part of the Healing Service. Communion will be served at the appropriate time during the service as designated by the order of worship. The anointing oil will be placed on the forehead and hands will be placed, lovingly and gently, on the head or any other appropriate place on the individual being prayed for. Such an act is a tangible expression of the presence of the healing Christ, working in and through those who minister in His name. The oil being used for anointing points beyond itself and those doing the anointing to the action of the Holy Spirit and the presence of the healing Christ, who is God’s anointed One.
