GriefShare – An Educational Support Program
Mt. Bethel UMC will offer GriefShare, a 13-week program based on a Christ-centered perspective, on Thursdays from 6:30-8:15 pm beginning October 4 and ending February 7. You can begin attending at any point during the series to complete the remainder of the sessions. The GriefShare series can also be repeated again if you think it would be beneficial for you.
The weekly meetings begin with a professionally produced DVD featuring individuals who are experiencing grief as well as grief experts who can help you understand more clearly your grief journey. These DVDs provide a springboard to talk about the questions, concerns, issues, and feelings grievers are experiencing on their grief journey in an educationally supportive and helpful setting.
The facilitators were both widowed at mid-life and have also experienced the death of parents, grandparents, siblings, and close friends. Beside the experiential piece, they have expertise in their professions. Dr. Susan Zonnebelt-Smeenge is a licensed clinical psychologist and R.N., and Dr. Bob DeVries is a pastor and seminary professor (emeritus). Together they have co-authored four books on aspects of grieving and one book on living fully after preparing for one’s own death. They also participate in a number of the GriefShare DVD sessions, featured as grief experts.
You won’t want to miss this opportunity if you have experienced a significant loss including that of a spouse, child, parent, sibling, or friend for which you are presently grieving. Or, if not grieving yourself, please encourage someone you know who would benefit from these meetings to give GriefShare a try.
