GriefShare – An Educational Support Program
Note: Will not meet November 22 and December 27
Mt. Bethel UMC will offer GriefShare, a 13-week program based on a Christ-centered perspective, on Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30 pm beginning October 4, 2017, and ending January 17, 2018. You can begin attending at any point during the series to complete the remainder of the sessions. The GriefShare series can also be repeated again if you think it would be beneficial for you.
The weekly meetings begin with a professionally produced DVD featuring individuals who are experiencing grief as well as grief experts who can help you understand more clearly your grief journey. These DVDs provide a springboard to talk about the questions, concerns, issues, and feelings grievers are experiencing on their grief journey in an educationally supportive and helpful setting.
You won’t want to miss this opportunity if you have experienced a significant loss including that of a spouse, child, parent, sibling, or friend for which you are presently grieving. Or, if not grieving yourself, please encourage someone you know who would benefit from these meetings to give GriefShare a try.
The weekly meetings are led by Dr. Susan Zonnebelt-Smeenge, a licensed clinical psychologist, and Dr. Robert (Bob) DeVries, an ordained minister and seminary professor, who have both been widowed as well as have experienced multiple other significant losses, such as parents and siblings. Together they facilitated grief support groups in Michigan for over 14 years before moving to Marietta and becoming associate members of Mt. Bethel. They have co-authored four books on grieving and one on the dying process and speak nationally on grief and loss issues. They also appear frequently on the GriefShare DVDs.

In addition, Dr. Susan Zonnebelt-Smeenge, a fully licensed clinical psychologist, is available on a private practice basis to church members as well as the community on Thursdays from 8am to 8pm at Mt. Bethel UMC to provide counseling on dying, grief, and loss related issues to those who desire to see a therapist. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call Susan at 616.780.1082.
