The parallelisms in 1 John are striking for their simplicity: Christ vs. antichrists, light vs. darkness, truth vs. falsehood, righteousness vs. sin, love of the Father vs. love of the world, and the Spirit of God vs. the spirit of the Antichrist. While this is not a complete list, it reveals a letter that presents the world in an uncomplicated way—there is right and there is wrong, period. This emphasis by John, while striking, is not without love. It’s quite the opposite, in fact. John recognized that love comes from God, and he encouraged the believers to love one another (1 John 4:7). John’s first epistle teaches that while it is important to recognize the lines between truth and error, it must always be done in a spirit of love. The study of 1 John will invite us to look at many healthy relationship contrast and comparison. We will be able to apply what we learn immediately.
The Covenant experience “emphasizes the biblical concept of covenant as a unifying pattern through all books of the Old and New Testaments. It underscores the unique relationship that God chooses to have with us as God’s people. This relationship is grounded in the faithfulness of God’s love and on our ongoing commitment to stay in love with God while we share signs of that love with others.”
Participants should have a copy of The Covenant Bible Study: Trusting participants guide for this study which is available in the Mt. Bethel bookstore.
The Divine Conspiracy: Rediscovering Our Hidden Life in God
Is Jesus part of your daily life—here and now? Or, by failing to take him seriously, have you relegated him to the realm of the “hereafter?” Christians for the most part consider the primary function of Christianity to be admittance to heaven. But a faith that guarantees a satisfactory afterlife, yet has absolutely no impact on life in the here and now, is nothing more than “consumer Christianity” and “bumper-sticker faith.” In an era when so many consider Jesus a beloved but remote savior, readers of The Divine Conspiracy will explore a revolutionary way to experience God—in a healthy supernatural relationship, by knowing Him as an essential part of the here and now, an integral part of every aspect of our existence. The Divine Conspiracy calls us into a more authentic faith and offers a practical plan by which we can become Christ-like.
Participants will need a copy of The Divine Conspiracy: Rediscovering Our Hidden Life in God by Dallas Willard and The Divine Conspiracy: Jesus’ Master Class for Life which are available in the Mt. Bethel bookstore.
The Good and Beautiful God: Falling in Love with the God Jesus Knows
This study will follow the teaching of James Bryan Smith in his book Good and Beautiful God. Smith says, “We all have ideas we tell ourselves about God and how he works in our lives. Some are true – but many are false.” This study will put our ideas to the test and see if they match up about what Jesus himself reveals about God. Discover the truth in scripture, and take steps in making these new narratives real in your body, soul and mind.
Participants will need a Bible and a copy of The Good and Beautiful God: Falling in Love with the God Jesus Knows by James Bryan Smith which is available in the Mt. Bethel Bookstore.
In this study we get to focus on the superiority of Jesus and our relationship with him and anything we put before our relationship with Him. Dr. Randy Mickler will be leading us through this New Testament study of Hebrews. This book makes it clear that Jesus Christ exceeds all other people, pursuits, objects, or hopes to which human beings offer allegiance. Hebrews pictures Jesus as better than the angels, as bringing better lives to humanity through salvation, as offering a better hope than the Mosaic Law could promise, as a better sacrifice for our sins than a bull or a goat, and as providing a better inheritance in heaven for those who place their faith in Him. Jesus is indeed superior to all others.
Set around the fall of the Northern Kingdom of Israel, the Book of Hosea denounces the worship of gods other than Yahweh, metaphorically comparing Israel’s abandonment of Yahweh to a woman being unfaithful to her husband. The relationship between Hosea and his unfaithful wife Gomer is comparable to the relationship between Yahweh and his unfaithful people Israel. The eventual reconciliation of Hosea and Gomer is treated as a hopeful metaphor for the eventual reconciliation between Yahweh and Israel.
Join in this study and discover the importance of our healthy relationship is to have with our Father and each other and contrast it to the realities we live with when we don’t. Participants will need a copy of Hosea by Jennifer Rothschild which is available in the Mt. Bethel bookstore.
The Gospel of John
The Gospel of John is a selective, symbolic, eyewitness account of the person and ministry of Jesus, written so that you may believe in Him as the Christ, the Son of God, and thus have life in His name.
This study will focus on our glorious opportunity to study Jesus, his life, death, and resurrection fulfilling the prophecies of the Old Testament and to surrender our lives as step into a relationship with him.
Participants will need a copy of The Gospel of John workbook by Ben Witherington III which is available in the Mt. Bethel bookstore.
