Do you remember the children’s song “Deep and Wide?”
Deep and wide, deep and wide there’s a fountain flowing deep and wide.
That’s all there really is to the song. Some hand motions and a catchy little tune. As a child singing that song in church, I’m pretty sure I never really thought about the “fountain.” Now, as an adult who has stood in the need of some serious grace, I have a better understanding of the Fountain we were singing about.
I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. (Ephesians 3:16-19)
This love of Christ, poured out through His blood on the cross in the ultimate act of grace and forgiveness, is deep enough to reach the depths of my need. It is wide enough to overwhelm my fears. It is bright like the stars to lead me home. It is a marvelous, infinite, matchless grace that shows us the fullness of His love for His children.
When we are rooted and established in His love, He pours out His power on us so that we are filled to overflowing with the goodness of God. He poured out grace and in that fullness, we should extend grace to others. He poured out forgiveness and in that fullness, we should be quick to forgive others. He poured out love and in that fullness, we should love others fiercely.
Dear Lord…let me sink into your love. Let it overwhelm me. Teach me to love like you…boundlessly, infinitely, fully. Amen.
