Mt. Bethel Church, Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), and Walton High School Partnership Explained

This past week was action-packed with the Holy Spirit. Following our DNOW spiritual retreat for students, we had our first Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) event with the Walton High School Football team on Tuesday evening. Your pastor team and I cooked burgers for the student-athletes, and Edwin Turnipseed gave an epic locker room talk that was powerful and inspiring.

I want to explain our partnership with FCA and Walton and why. Since 1954, FCA has been challenging coaches and athletes at all levels to use the powerful platform of sport to reach every coach and every athlete with the transforming power of Jesus Christ. FCA focuses on serving local communities by engaging, equipping, and empowering coaches and athletes to unite, inspire, and change the world through the gospel.

Sports are a big deal in our competitive East Cobb community. The Church competes with athletics for your kids’ time and attention, and we have been losing too often. Many of our busy Mt. Bethel families know this all too well. Because of the partnership with Mt. Bethel, FCA, and Walton High School, we have the opportunity to build relationships with the Walton football players and coaches on campus and through their sports.

Each month, Mt. Bethel is striving to host an activity on campus with the Walton Football team in partnership with FCA. We want to bring Jesus and the Church to these athletes and ultimately, we hope they will want to have a relationship with us at Mt. Bethel. If you think our Walton/FCA adoption does not directly impact you, I challenge you to take a different perspective. We need everyone to pray for, root for, and support the success of this adoption because it will have Kingdom impact in our community. If our adoption of the Walton Football team excites you too, you are welcome to come to one of our upcoming events and “be the church” by engaging these athletes. Please email Edwin Turnipseed and he will plug you in.

We want every school in our area to embrace FCA and its presence on campus. As our Walton adoption bears fruit, we hope more student-athletes, families, and coaches clamor for Jesus in their schools. Please pray for more doors to open to FCA in our local schools and even within other teams at Walton. These schools and teams cannot invite FCA and Mt. Bethel in until someone requests to be the liaison.

The Student Ministry staff continues to develop relationships with students in other area middle schools and high schools as well. Currently, they are engaged at Pope High School, and Dickerson, Dodgen, and Hightower Middle Schools.

A new format for High School Worship starts Sunday, September 11, at 9:30am in the Garage

Closer to home, we are introducing a new format for our High School worship on Sundays, starting on September 11 at 9:30am in The Garage. We want all our kids to know Jesus and we want to impart a Biblical worldview to them before they go off to college and beyond. Here’s what we are emphasizing:

  • Relevant Bible teaching for high school students
  • Engaging worship
  • Sharing who Jesus is
  • Sharing a Biblical worldview

We’ve thrown in a few enticements as well — hot breakfast items and fun drinks will be available each Sunday when they come to The Garage. Please encourage the high schooler in your life to give this a try.

Most importantly, please talk about the Bible with your kids and grandkids at home; Sunday just isn’t enough. If you need resources for home discussions, please reach out to Kimmi Lochner, our Director of Student Ministries. We want to support you at home.

In Christ,

Jody Ray
Lead Pastor
